About

While the country of Soviet Union may have itself ceased to exist decades ago, its ideologies continue to influence the present day visitors of the People’s Publishing House. With not more than hundred people crossing the creaking doors of this store today, back in 1970s and 80s, this was a place of convergence for all the political thinkers. Strutting your way through the wooden shelves, your eyes are greeted with books that include 45 hardbound volumes of communist ideologies, to the ones written by Karl Marx or even Mao’s revered “Red Book. Being one of the few surviving landmarks from the colonial-era, the store was known to be a distributor of all Soviet books and magazines, published for USSR in India. Some of the popular ones include- ‘Misha’ and ‘Soviet Naari’. Once upon a time, a common hang out place for professors and intellectuals, today it merely welcomes lost tourists in search of maps. With dust gradually settling on these forgotten pages, People’s Publishing House at present is home to some of the most valuable pre-independence mementos.
