Started in England in 1994, Rasa, the brainchild of Das Sreedharan, soon became a hot favourite among English, European and Asian clientele in the UK. Rasa challenged the perception of an Indian curry house by offering Indian cuisine in minimalistic presentation, largely influenced by Kerala and Europe. This makes Rasa one of the few Indian restaurants that has explored authentic Indian fare in contemporary formats to invent a new genre of Indian cuisine, thereby creating a cult following, with the likes of Anthony Bourdain, Jamie Oliver and the famous food critic India Knight on the list of admirers.
Rasa is organic in both food and experience, being an integral part of the whole. For Rasa, ‘Organic’ is a way of life. Rasa also organises “FreshWay”, an organic market where many organipreneurs display their produce while live music brings the festive feel of a village market. Rasa also supports a charity called Make A Difference (MAD), and under this initiative, Rasa has a programme for underprivileged children where they learn to become self-reliant through cooking.
Founder and Chief Chef, Das creates food in the same manner that he builds the community around him, with emotions, by having conversations and building stories, while the food entices ones taste buds. Central to the reason for Rasa’s popularity has been his philosophy believing steadfastly in the power of organic food and the vibrancy of inclusive community building through his many programmes. Says Das, “The secret ingredient in our food is love. We are passionate in what we do and we hope that shows in our food.''
