The group is supported by flutists, Pandit Pravin Godkhindi in the Hindustani style and Vidwan Pranesh in Carnatic style. The group, set up in 1989, is now ably led by Vidwan Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma, a renowned musician, who has performed all over India and abroad. It comprises of professional percussion artistes, who are basically players of mridangam, an essential percussion accompaniment in any Carnatic music concert, who play different percussion instruments in this group. The uniqueness of Layalahri is the successful blending of different forms of percussion, where the charm of the rhythm of folklore is not dispensed with at the cost of tonal value. The mellifluous musical notes from the flute and Bansuri add the moods to the ensemble that leave the listeners entranced. Layalahari is a very popular group that has been performing all across the country and has earned the respect and admiration of discerning music lovers and the musically uninitiated as well.
