What we like

The gaumukh is a unique feature of the temple and the submerged temple lends to it an air of mysticism. What must not be missed is the fact that the temple is a monolith, i.e. carved out of one single stone.

  • Fair during shivratri

About

The monolithic rock temple was built in the 7th century and redone in 18th century by Ahilya Bai Holkar. This place is also known as Garuda Tirth, it has a water outlet in the shape of a Gaumukh from which water flows as in Abhishek. What makes this temple all the more interesting is the presence of the original Shivalinga which was 12 ft in height and is currently under water in a sunken temple above which the present temple has been constructed. On every Shivratri, a fair is held in honour of the temple diety called Shri Gutkeshwar Mahadeo.
